What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), and why it matters in Jordan

7 min read By The Big Agency, Amman

GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, is the practice of making a website the source an AI answer engine cites. Where SEO competes for a position among ten links, GEO competes to be one of the handful of sources a generated answer names. In Jordan that also means Arabic written natively and the city named as Amman, Jordan, so an engine does not read it as Oman.

What GEO is, and how it differs from SEO

A search result gives the reader a list and lets them choose. A generated answer does the choosing for them: it reads a few pages, writes a paragraph, and names the sources it used. Those named sources are the new front page, and GEO is the work of becoming one of them.

The structural difference is the number of winners. A results page has room for around ten links, and being fourth still brings traffic. A generated answer usually leans on a handful of sources, and everything below that line is invisible. GEO is therefore less about outranking and more about being the clearest statement of a fact the engine can find.

That changes how you write. A page answering the question in its first two sentences, in language that survives being lifted out, is one an engine can use. A page that builds slowly to a conclusion four screens down is not. Both audiences can be served, but the answer comes first.

How answer engines decide which sources to cite

Nobody outside these companies has the ranking rules, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. What is observable, from reading which pages get cited, is that the same handful of properties keep appearing.

None of them are tricks. They are what makes a page easy to trust and easy to quote.

  • Extractability. The answer sits in a sentence or two near the top that makes sense on its own. A fact buried inside a long narrative rarely gets pulled out.
  • Entity clarity and authority. The engine has to be sure who you are. One consistent name, address, phone number and description across your site, your Google Business Profile and third-party listings turns a website into a recognised entity.
  • Uniqueness. Information that exists nowhere else - prices, specifications, capacities, opening hours - has no substitute, so it gets cited. Content that restates what a hundred other pages say has a hundred alternatives.
  • Recency. Answer engines lean towards pages showing a real, dated update, especially for questions with a year in them. An undated page is a weaker bet than one that says when it was checked.
  • Structure. Headings written as the questions people ask, comparison tables, numbered steps, FAQ blocks and schema.org markup make a page machine-readable. Server-rendered HTML matters too: content that appears only after JavaScript runs may never be crawled.

Why GEO matters specifically for businesses in Jordan

The first reason is language. Arabic search is several registers at once - Modern Standard Arabic in the written question, Jordanian dialect in the spoken one, and English words dropped into both. Businesses in Jordan are asked about in all three, often in the same sentence, and a site that exists only in polished English is invisible for most of that traffic. Arabic written natively covers ground a translation never reaches.

The second reason is a real problem with the word عمّان. In Arabic results, Jordan's capital and the Sultanate of Oman are constantly confused: the queries overlap, and an engine reading a page that says only "عمّان" cannot always tell which country it means. The fix is boring and effective - write "عمّان، الأردن" every time the city is named, in the text, the title, the description and the structured data.

The third reason is timing. Very few sites in Jordan are built the way answer engines prefer: published facts, answer-first pages, connected structured data, Arabic and English written separately. Where competition for a citation is thin, the requirements to win one are modest - and that window does not stay open indefinitely.

What a business in Jordan can do this month

None of this requires a rebuild. Most of it is a week of unglamorous cleanup, and it helps ordinary search at the same time.

Do them in order. The first three are worth more than the rest combined: an engine that cannot identify you will not cite you, however good the writing is.

  • Claim and complete the Google Business Profile: category, hours, service area, photos, and the address written as "عمّان، الأردن" in the Arabic listing.
  • Make the facts identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours and services should match exactly across your site, your profile and every directory. Contradictions make an engine hedge, and hedging means citing someone else.
  • Rewrite your main pages answer-first: the direct answer in the opening two sentences, then the explanation, with each H2 turned into a question a buyer would type.
  • Add structured data and make sure the page renders on the server. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage schema, connected so they refer to each other.
  • Publish facts nobody else publishes: prices where you can, specifications, capacities, inclusions and exclusions, delivery times. Checkable detail is the most citable thing on any website.
  • Get listed where your sector is listed, and write Arabic and English as two originals with correct hreflang - not one translated copy of the other.

What GEO is not

It is not keyword stuffing with a new name. Repeating a phrase does not make a model quote you; a model quotes the sentence that answers the question most clearly, and stuffed text answers nothing. The writing has to be plainer than SEO copy ever was.

It is not an llms.txt file. The idea - a text file telling models how to read your site - is reasonable, but Google has said publicly that it does not use llms.txt, and no major engine has confirmed it changes citation behaviour. Adding one costs nothing and may matter later; treating it as the strategy is a mistake.

And it is not guaranteed. No one controls what a model says, the same question can return different sources on different days, and there is no tracking tool with the authority Search Console has for search. What you can do is measure the trend: ask the engines your customers' questions, record who they cite, and repeat monthly. The Big Agency applies this method to its own site - server-rendered content, a connected schema.org graph, hreflang, answer-first pages and published facts.

SEO and GEO, side by side

Same website, two different games. Most of the work overlaps; the goal and the measurement do not.

A GEO checklist for a business in Jordan

  1. 01

Find out what the engines say about you today

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews the questions your customers ask, in Arabic and in English, and write down the answers and the sources named. That log is your baseline.

  2. 02

Fix your identity before your content

One exact name, address, phone number and set of hours, repeated identically on your site, your Google Business Profile and every directory. Write the city as "عمّان، الأردن" in Arabic so no engine has to guess the country.

  3. 03

Put the answer at the top of every important page

Two or three sentences that answer the page's question completely and read correctly if quoted alone, then the detail underneath, with headings phrased as real questions.

  4. 04

Publish the facts you keep in emails

Prices, specifications, capacities, inclusions, exclusions, turnaround times, opening hours. Every checkable detail is a fact an engine can attribute to you, and a reason to name you.

  5. 05

Mark it up and serve it from the server

Add Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage schema and connect them. Confirm the content is in the HTML the crawler receives, add hreflang for Arabic and English, and show an updated date.

  6. 06

Re-run the questions monthly and change one thing at a time

Keep the log. When a citation appears, look at which page earned it and what that page does differently. Slow, boring measurement is the only honest reporting available here.

Questions people ask about this

What is GEO in simple terms?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, means preparing your website so that AI answer engines - ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews - use it as a source and name you when they answer a question. You compete to be the sentence the answer is built from, not for a click.

Is SEO dead now that answers are generated?

No, and treating it that way is expensive. The engines still crawl, still read HTML, and still rely on the technical health, internal linking and crawlability that SEO delivers. GEO is a layer on top of good SEO, not a replacement for it.

Does an llms.txt file help?

Not on current evidence. Google has stated publicly that it does not use llms.txt, and no major engine has confirmed it affects whether you get cited. It costs nothing to publish and may matter later - but put it well below structured data, published facts and answer-first writing.

How do I measure whether GEO is working?

By asking, repeatedly and in the same words. Put your customers' questions to each engine every month and record who is cited. Search Console still covers the search side; there is no equivalent tool for generated answers, and anyone presenting a precise AI ranking number is presenting an estimate.

Should I do this in Arabic or English?

Both, written separately. Your customers ask in Arabic, in English and in a mix of the two, and each language needs its own page rather than a translation with hreflang bolted on. Arabic pages should name the city as "عمّان، الأردن" so results are not confused with the Sultanate of Oman.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Identity fixes and structured data are read quickly once a page is re-crawled. Being cited consistently follows the accumulation of unique, quotable facts, so it takes longer. Where local competition is thin, movement can appear sooner - but plan on measuring a trend across months.

If you want this done for you

Want your business to be the source the answer quotes?

Technical SEO, local search, structured data, and Arabic and English written separately rather than translated. We apply the same method to our own site: server-rendered content, a connected schema.org graph, hreflang, answer-first pages and published facts. Work is quoted against a written scope, and every account stays in your name.
